Pause & Effect: The Debate Lingers.

Here’s a scan of page 212 of my copy of Stephen Meadows’ Pause & Effect. (If you’re not in 5376, we had an issue with different versions of the text.) It links to a Google album, so you can zoom in for a closer look, if you like.

To those of you with a different edition: is the paragraph simply missing (which would be typical of the rough formatting of the book thus far), or was it deleted in a different edition?

I’ve got the 2003 edition, this copy is from a 2004 printing, specifically.

  1. Chris,Here is my entire copy from page 212 which differs significantly from you scan – beyond just the missing paragraph:”At the end of the day, as with many ‘creative’ projects and forms of ‘content,’ the success of the project isn’t measured by numbers but by communication and emotional result. Finally, interactive narrative, like any other form of narrative, is something that will fall within subjective purview and emotional borders. This is to say, like graphic design or music composition, interactive narrative is something that will resonate with a reader only if that reader has established some relationship with the narrative. This is the responsibility of the author first and the reader second. This isn’t a new relationship. Some kinds of music, such as classical forms that Bach composed, certainly have formula and structure that can be clearly communicated once understood. However, it’s the specific implementation and whether it moves the listener that is the final factor of its success. This is not only harder to understand and communicate, but for some people, it’s impossible to do in the first place.Action is the highest form of thought. That is to say that we really understand something only when we’ve done it. It’s one thing to espouse that interactive narrative is a new art form or that it has new capabilities or that it even exists in the first place, but it’s certainly a different issue to build it.

  2. Hi Chris,My text is the same as yours. The first half of the first sentence is no longer there and neither is the third paragraph, which contains the text for our question. Here’s a copy and paste from my e-book. It’s identical to yours.”If the wind will not serve, take to the oars.—Roman Proverb The success of a project isn’t measured by numbers but by communication and emotional impact. Finally, interactive narrative, like any other form of narrative, is something that will fall within subjective purview and emotional borders. This is to say that, like graphic design or music composition, an interactive narrative is something that will resonate with a reader only if that reader has established some relationship with the narrative. This is the responsibility of the author first and the reader second. This isn’t a new relationship.
